Small Shinjuku restaurants can have narrow aisles, closely spaced counter seats and no storage area. A large suitcase may block evacuation routes or service paths even when the staff wants to help. Solve storage before joining a queue.
Use this priority order
- Your hotel: ask whether luggage can be held before check-in or after check-out.
- A staffed storage or station locker: select one on the same side as the restaurant and your next route.
- Luggage delivery: useful when moving between hotels or heading to an airport later.
- The restaurant: carry the suitcase inside only after confirming that the venue has space.
Do not store luggage on the opposite side of the station
A locker is helpful only when collecting the bag does not require another difficult station crossing. Pin the locker location and photograph nearby signs.
Using station lockers
Major Tokyo stations commonly provide several locker areas, but large compartments can fill quickly. Lockers may use a key, a printed receipt, a password or the same IC card used for payment.
- Photograph the locker bank, locker number and nearest exit or ticket gate.
- Keep the physical key or receipt separate from the bag.
- When using an IC card, remember which card opened the locker.
- Check the retrieval deadline, operating hours and extra-day charges.
- Do not place passports, essential medicine or valuables in storage unless you accept the risk and terms.
If the first locker bank is full, ask station staff for another area rather than dragging the suitcase through every corridor while searching.
Choosing a luggage-friendly restaurant
Even in a spacious building, the individual restaurant may have its own rule. Ask before waiting. Never place a case where it blocks an aisle, doorway, service station or another customer’s seat.
Delivery and hotel storage
Hotels often arrange luggage forwarding to another hotel or an airport, subject to destination, timing and acceptance conditions. Designated convenience stores and specialist counters can also accept luggage delivery. Confirm the required lead time; same-day service is not available for every route.
When leaving luggage with a hotel, verify the collection deadline and whether storage is available to non-guests. Keep the claim tag and photograph it.
Common luggage mistakes
- Entering a long queue before asking whether the suitcase can fit.
- Using a locker inside a paid area that will be difficult to re-enter.
- Forgetting the exact railway operator or ticket gate near the locker.
- Storing every charger, medicine or travel document inside the main case.
- Assuming a restaurant can watch luggage left outside.
